Buying advice

Choosing Vented Tumble Dryers

A vented tumble dryer removes warm, damp air through a hose to the outside. It is a straightforward drying system, but it only suits a position with a safe, practical vent route. Check whether the hose can reach an external wall vent without being crushed, sharply bent or run through an unsuitable space. Do not plan to vent into the room, a cupboard or a roof space.

Choose drum capacity to match the loads coming from your washing machine, giving bulky towels and bedding room to tumble. Compare the energy label, programme controls, sensor drying and stated noise for each model.

A vented dryer also needs good room airflow and regular filter cleaning. Measure the appliance, hose space and door clearance before ordering, particularly under a worktop.

Route to outside

Plan a short, suitable vent-hose route to an external outlet and follow the model's installation instructions.

Drum capacity

Match the dryer to your usual washed load and leave enough space for clothes and bedding to tumble.

Energy use

Compare the current energy label and programme data, particularly if the dryer will be used frequently.

Key questions

Does a vented tumble dryer have to vent outside?

Yes. The moist exhaust air needs a suitable route outdoors. Venting into the room or an enclosed space can cause damp and is not an appropriate installation.

Can I put the vent hose through an open window?

Some setups may allow a temporary window route, but it can be awkward and inefficient. A secure external vent installed to the manufacturer's guidance is the better arrangement.

How long can the vent hose be?

Use the length and routing limits stated for the exact model. Long, crushed or sharply bent hoses can restrict airflow.

Do vented dryers have a water tank to empty?

Normally no, because moisture leaves through the vent hose. You still need to clean the lint filter and maintain the vent route.

Can a vented dryer go in a cupboard?

Only if the model instructions specifically allow the proposed installation and all ventilation and clearance requirements are met. Do not enclose a dryer without approval.
