Bosch freestanding cooker in a fitted kitchen with food cooking

Buying advice

Choosing Electric Cookers

An electric cooker combines an electric oven, grill and hob in one freestanding appliance. It is a straightforward replacement for a traditional cooker space and works well in homes without a gas supply. Start by measuring the gap, including width, depth and room for the oven door and handles. Compare solid-plate, ceramic and induction hob options, then look at oven capacity, the number of cavities and whether fan cooking is included.

Electrical loads vary, and many cookers need a dedicated cooker circuit rather than a standard socket. Check the rating and connection point before delivery, and arrange installation by a suitably qualified person. Cleaning features and energy information can also help distinguish similar models.

Cooker width

Measure the full gap and compare the stated appliance width, depth, height adjustment and door clearance.

Hob surface

Solid plates are simple, ceramic is smooth, and induction needs compatible magnetic pans.

Oven layout

A second cavity or separate grill helps when preparing several parts of a meal together.

Key questions

What size electric cooker should I buy?

Measure the existing kitchen gap. Common nominal widths include 50cm, 55cm and 60cm, but exact dimensions and clearances vary by model.

Can an electric cooker plug into a normal socket?

Many cannot because their load is too high. Check the appliance rating and use the dedicated cooker circuit specified by the manufacturer.

Is a ceramic or induction cooker better?

Ceramic hobs work with most flat-bottomed pans and are simple to use. Induction responds faster and heats compatible magnetic pans directly, but you may need different cookware.

Do I need a fan oven?

Fan cooking can distribute heat more evenly and is useful for multi-shelf cooking. Conventional heat may still suit baking where top and bottom heat behaviour matters.

Who should install an electric cooker?

Use a suitably qualified installer, especially where hardwiring or circuit checks are needed. The correct circuit, isolation and connection must match the appliance instructions.
