Buying advice

Choosing Ceramic Hobs

A ceramic hob gives you a smooth electric cooking surface that is easy to wipe and works with most flat-bottomed pans. The heating elements warm the glass and then the cookware, so temperature changes are less immediate than induction or gas. Compare the number and spacing of zones, control position and whether any zones expand for larger pans.

Measure both the hob's outside dimensions and the worktop cut-out, especially when replacing an older model. Ceramic hobs can have a substantial electrical load and may need a dedicated circuit. Check the rating, cable and isolation requirements before buying, and use a suitably qualified installer for connection or worktop alterations.

Worktop cut-out

Match the aperture, overall glass size, worktop depth and required clearances to the installation drawing.

Zone spacing

Make sure your regular pans can sit together without handles or bases crowding adjacent zones.

Controls and safety

Compare touch or dial controls, residual-heat indicators, timers and control locks.

Key questions

What is the difference between ceramic and induction hobs?

Ceramic elements heat the glass, which then heats the pan. Induction heats compatible magnetic pans directly and usually responds faster.

Do I need special pans for a ceramic hob?

Most flat-bottomed cookware will work. Smooth, level bases give better contact with the glass and reduce the risk of instability.

Does a ceramic hob need hardwiring?

Many need a suitable dedicated circuit because of their electrical load. Check the model rating and have the supply confirmed before fitting.

Can I fit a ceramic hob in my existing cut-out?

Only if the exact aperture, worktop thickness, depth and clearances match. Nominal hob width does not guarantee the same cut-out size.

How should I clean a ceramic hob?

Let it cool, then use products and tools approved by the manufacturer. Avoid abrasive pads and lift pans rather than dragging them across the glass.
