Buying advice

Choosing Gas Hobs

A gas hob gives you visible flame control and works with a wide range of cookware. Choose the number, size and spacing of burners around the pans you use most, especially if you cook with a wok, large frying pan or several saucepans together. Pan-support design and control position also affect everyday handling and cleaning.

Measure the worktop cut-out as well as the overall hob width, and check the required clearances from walls, cupboards and any oven below. You need a suitable gas supply, ventilation and often an electrical connection for ignition. Installation and any gas alterations must be completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Burner mix

Match burner sizes and spacing to your regular pans, including any wok or large casserole.

Cut-out size

Check the worktop aperture, overall dimensions and clearance from walls, cabinets and appliances.

Pan supports

Look for a stable layout that is easy to lift and clean around.

Key questions

Who can install a gas hob?

A Gas Safe registered engineer must connect, alter and commission the gas appliance. Any electrical or worktop work also needs to meet the relevant requirements.

Will a new gas hob fit my existing cut-out?

Not necessarily. Compare the exact cut-out, worktop thickness, appliance depth and clearance requirements with the new model's installation drawing.

Does a gas hob need electricity?

Many models need electricity for automatic ignition. Check the stated connection and make sure it remains accessible after fitting.

What is a wok burner?

It is a higher-output burner designed to spread heat across larger cookware. Check that the surrounding zone spacing suits the pans you use.

Can I replace gas with induction?

Possibly, if the worktop and electrical circuit are suitable. The gas supply must be safely disconnected by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
